St Laurence in Thanet

The first building used for worship in the Thanet parish of 'St Lawrence' was at St Laurence-in-Thanet; Note the difference in spelling between that of the Village of St Lawrence and the church. The church was built in 1062 and rebuilt during the following centuries with the most significant changes being in the 16th Century. Its four face clock is now run by electricity, this conversion has been done in recent years, before that is was wound up by hand every other day, it could be left longer but it took ages to wind the 3 weights up.
The tower has 10 bells and access to it is gained through the church and across the roof, this leads straight in to the ringing room, above the ringing room is the clock mechanism and above that is the home of all ten bells. You can go right on to the roof of the tower and the view around Ramsgate and surrounding area is quite fantastic.
